Once your Czech trade license is registered, the trade itself is ready. But that is only the first part of setting up as self-employed.
After registration, you may still need to register your self-employment with ČSSZ and your health insurance company, resolve your tax identification, set up monthly payments, access your Data Box, check VAT obligations and prepare your invoicing.
KEY FACT
For foreigners, it is safer to treat these as separate steps instead of assuming that one trade license application finishes everything automatically.
1. Receive Your Trade Licensing Register Extract and IČO
After the Trade License Office completes the registration, you receive an extract from the Trade Licensing Register. It confirms your registered trade and includes your IČO.
If you have never had a Czech IČO before, one is assigned during the registration. If you had an IČO before, your existing number is used again.
2. Register with ČSSZ
If your self-employment is subject to Czech social security, register the start of your activity with the Czech Social Security Administration (ČSSZ).
This registration is important because ČSSZ needs the correct information about your self-employment and whether it is your main or secondary activity. You also need the correct payment details for any social insurance contributions.
For foreign freelancers, we recommend completing the ČSSZ registration directly with ČSSZ rather than treating the trade license registration as the end of the process.
PRACTICAL PEXPATS NOTE
Pexpats registers foreign clients with ČSSZ separately. This lets us make sure the activity is recorded correctly and that the client receives the information needed for future payments and reporting.
If you also have Czech employment, or another reason why your self-employment should be treated as secondary activity, make sure ČSSZ records it correctly.
3. Register with Your Health Insurance Company
If you are covered by Czech public health insurance, you also need to register the start of your self-employment with your health insurance company.
The insurer needs to know whether your trade is your main or secondary activity and how your insurance contributions should be handled. If you already have Czech employment, this is especially important because your payment obligations can be different.
If Czech public health insurance applies to you, complete the registration directly with your health insurance company.
PRACTICAL PEXPATS NOTE
Pexpats registers foreign clients with the relevant health insurance company separately and obtains the information needed for future payments and reporting.
If Czech public health insurance does not apply to you, your insurance situation needs to be handled differently.
OFFICIAL GUIDANCE
Czech public health insurers require self-employed people covered by the system to report the start of self-employment.
4. Resolve Your Czech Tax Identification — DIČ
DIČ (daňové identifikační číslo) is a Czech tax identification number. It is different from your IČO.
Since 01.01.2024, a self-employed individual generally does not have to register separately for Czech personal income tax just because they started a business.
For foreigners, a DIČ can still be useful or needed in some situations, including other tax or VAT registrations. If you do not have a Czech birth number, it can also make identification with the Tax Office easier.
PRACTICAL PEXPATS NOTE
When a foreign client needs a DIČ for their tax setup, Pexpats applies to the Tax Office separately and obtains confirmation of the tax registration number.
5. Set Up Your Social and Health Insurance Payments
Once the registrations are completed, make sure you know whether you need to make monthly payments, how much to pay, where to send the money and which payment details to use.
The rules depend on your situation. Main self-employment, secondary self-employment and different health insurance situations can have different payment obligations.
Do not start sending payments using guessed account numbers or variable symbols. Use the payment information connected with your own registration.
6. Access and Check Your Data Box
A Data Box (datová schránka) is the official electronic mailbox used by Czech authorities.
WARNING
Do not ignore messages in your Data Box. Some messages are only informational, while others have deadlines or require action.
A Data Box is created automatically for self-employed people with a Czech IČO. Once you receive access, check it regularly. Authorities can send requests, decisions and other official documents there.
LEGAL REFERENCE
Act No. 300/2008 Coll., § 4(1) — a Data Box is created for a self-employed individual after the relevant registration information is received by the system.
7. Check Whether VAT or Light VAT Registration Is Needed
Getting a trade license and IČO does not make you a VAT payer.
Many freelancers start without full VAT registration. But some transactions can create VAT obligations from the beginning, especially when working with businesses in other EU countries or receiving certain services from abroad.
You can also become an Identified Person, often called Light VAT, without becoming a full VAT payer.
8. Start Invoicing Correctly
Once your trade is active and you start doing business, you can issue invoices.
Use your correct business details, including your IČO. The invoice requirements can change if you are a VAT payer or an Identified Person.
Pexpats Invoice Generator is made for Czech trade license holders and companies and helps create invoices that meet Czech invoicing requirements.

What Is the Biggest Mistake After Registering a Czech Trade?
Treating the trade license registration as if it automatically finishes the whole self-employment setup.
The Trade License Office deals with the trade registration. Social security, health insurance, tax identification, payments and VAT can still require separate steps.
PRACTICAL PEXPATS NOTE
For foreign clients, Pexpats completes the relevant registrations with each authority separately. We treat the trade license, ČSSZ, health insurance, and any required tax setup as separate parts of setting up the business.
